The course provides a broad experience in clinical activities, including inpatient and outpatient care, assisting in the operating room, emergency room call, and the consult service. Through this rotation, the student will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the breadth of OHNS and to work with the residents, fellows, and faculty in the Duke Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences. Students will spend time with each of the following divisions:
- Head and Neck Oncology
- Laryngology
- Facial Plastics
- Otology/Neurotology
- Rhinology/Endoscopic Skull Base
- Pediatric Otolaryngology
The rotation occurs at Duke Hospital. The rotation will be divided between the different services, and daily assignments will be made by the chief residents. Students will be active contributors during ward rounds and will be expected to take one night and one weekend of call with the junior resident. At the end of the rotation, students will give a 15-20–minute presentation on the topic of their choice at Head and Neck Surgery Grand Rounds.
In addition to standard clinical duties, the student will also have the opportunity to attend the Temporal Bone Lab and any other hands-on labs that may be scheduled during their time at Duke. Throughout the month, the student is expected to attend weekly Grand Rounds, didactic sessions, and tumor board.

How to Apply
We encourage medical students to apply for a sub-internship rotation with us before they apply for a residency so they may apply to residency after gaining in-person experience with the Duke Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences. However, the sub-internship is not required prior to residency application. If you are interested in doing a sub-internship at Duke, please contact Lori Allsbrook. Applications for external students will be taken through the AAMC’s Visiting Student Application Service.
