Duke audiology and speech-language pathology are committed to education of future generations of communication professionals as well making sure that current audiologists and speech-language pathologists are practicing using the latest in evidenced based evaluation and treatment techniques.

Audiology Residency Program

As a audiology resident, students will gain hands-on experience in diagnostics, auditory-evoked potentials, auditory processing disorder evaluations, NICU hearing screens, tinnitus evaluation and management, and observational experience in intra-operative monitoring, hearing aids, and aural rehabilitation.

Duke Voice Care Center Graduate Student Externship

The Duke Voice Care Center provides semester-long externship opportunities for graduate SLP clinicians interested in clinical voice care. Eligible students will learn how to evaluate and treat patients with a variety of voice disorders including traumatic vocal fold lesions, vocal fold paralysis, chronic cough, vocal cord dysfunction, laryngeal cancer, spasmodic dysphonia and more. Our speech pathologists work alongside DVCC laryngologists to care for a variety of patients, pediatric to geriatric, with laryngeal pathologies from acute to medically complex. DVCC team members see patients in multiple locations, giving students the chance to train in outpatient clinics in both Raleigh and Durham.

Otolaryngology Residency Program

The Duke Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences strives to be a premiere academic otolaryngology program through compassionate and extraordinary patient care, critical investigation of head and neck disease, and excellence in education.

Speech Pathology Graduate Student Externship

The Duke Speech Pathology program offers graduate clinicians the ability to apply their academic training in acute care, outpatient, and clinic settings in pediatric or adult programs that serve medically complex patients with a variety of speech, language, and swallowing disorders. 

Summer Professional Speech Pathology/Audiology Assistant Program

Summer Professional Speech Pathology/Audiology Assistant program at Duke Medicine started in 2005 and was modeled after the Duke Nursing PNA program. It is designed to prepare rising senior undergraduates/first year graduate students to experience the profession within the medical environment. This mentored 10-week program within the Department of Speech Pathology & Audiology runs from June – August.
