During Duke BOOST’s Science Summer Immersion Week from August 8-12, Duke HNS&CS faculty and staff welcomed students into their labs and clinics. Speech Pathologists Cyntiah Murashima, Rudmary Baez, and Karen Everett demonstrated swallowing evaluations, teaching 6th graders about the role of acute care SLPs in managing conditions like stroke, brain injury, and voice impairments.
In Dr. Dennis Frank-Ito’s lab, students explored the effects of cleft lip nasal deformity on nasal breathing through airflow visualizations, comparing healthy nasal passages to those with deformities. They also tested their sense of smell using instruments that measure odor detection at various concentrations. The week concluded with a visit to Dr. Trinitia Cannon’s lab
