Raleigh Firebirds and Duke Voice Care Center Team Up for Health Education

By Aleksandra Zabiran

A team from the Duke Voice Care Center, including Dan Sherwood, CCC-SLP, Eileen Raynor, MD, and Leda Scearce, M.M., M.S., CCC-SLP, provided vocal health education at the Raleigh Firebirds STEM and Health Fair on Saturday, February 15, at the Marsh Creek Community Center in Raleigh. They answered participants' questions about vocal health, distributed informational materials, and gave a short presentation on how the voice works, how voice problems develop, and how to prevent them.

The Raleigh Firebirds, a professional men's basketball team in The Basketball League (TBL), are deeply involved in the community, with STEM and health education being two of their top initiatives. Saturday's health/STEM Fair was a great opportunity for local STEM and health organizations to share information with young boys from a local middle school mentored by the Firebirds, citizens from the Raleigh community, and college students from Louisburg College.

Thank you to the Raleigh Firebirds and Raleigh Parks and Rec for inviting us to participate.
