On November 15, 2024, Leda Scearce, M.M., M.S., CCC-SLP, conducted a vocal health workshop at St. Mary's School in Raleigh. This all-girl, independent, college-preparatory, Episcopal, boarding, and day school serves girls in grades 9-12.

The workshop covered the basics of voice anatomy and physiology, vocal fold injuries, and strategies for promoting vocal health and preventing injuries. These strategies are essential for anyone who relies on their voice.

Participants included high school students enrolled in voice lessons, faculty and staff from the school, voice instructors, and biology students who are currently studying disease prevention and the science of sound. This diverse group benefited greatly from the comprehensive information and practical advice shared during the workshop.

Jennifer Moran, Academic Chair for Visual & Performing Arts, Instructor of Voice, and Director of Music at St. Mary's School, shared her thoughts on the workshop: " Thank you for helping our students begin good vocal health habits while they are just starting their careers and have years of singing ahead of them!"

By understanding the importance of vocal health and learning how to protect their voices, these young individuals are better equipped to pursue their passions and careers with confidence and care.

Leda Scearce, M.M., M.S., CCC-SLP, is a Clinical Singing Voice Specialist and Director of Performing Voice Programs and Development at Duke Voice Care Center. She is also a Clinical Associate Faculty at the Duke University School of Medicine and the Director of Community Engagement in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences.
