On Saturday, January 18th, Doug B. Garrison, AuD, and Krista Roper, AuD, CCC-A, participated in BOOST’s (Building Opportunities and Overtures in Science and Technology) Science Saturday.
They met with 8th-grade students and their peer "coaches" at the Trent Semans Center to discuss the profession of audiology. Dr. Garrison and Dr. Roper shared their individual journeys into the field and provided general information about audiology as a career. They explained the specifics of ear anatomy and physiology and gave an overview of the day-to-day experiences of audiology clinicians at Duke Health. They also emphasized the importance of hearing loss prevention, particularly in relation to the widespread use of earphones and earbuds among their generation.
BOOST is a multidimensional program designed to excite young people about science and inspire them to pursue careers in medicine and related fields. BOOST serves Durham Public Schools students from underrepresented communities including African American, Latinx, and Indigenous students; girls; and students from economically challenged families. BOOST is situated within Duke University School of Medicine’s Multicultural Resource Center
