Culture and Engagement in HNS&CS Careers

In January, the HNS&CS team took part in BOOST’s Science Saturday event. During this engaging session, 25 eighth-grade students had the opportunity to gain practical experience in the fields of otolaryngology, audiology, and speech pathology.

Duke HNS&CS is pleased to announce the launch of Project CHECKERS (Community Head and NEck Cancer Knowledge, Engagement, Research and Screening).

During Duke BOOST’s Science Summer Immersion Week from August 8-12, Duke HNS&CS faculty and staff welcomed students into their labs and clinics.

Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences transitioned from a division to an independent department in 2019. A key aspect of the strategic plan for the new department has involved clinician–scientist recruitment to continue the department’s mission of “advancing and sharing knowledge in the field.”

The Duke and UNC Chapters of the Association of Women Surgeons held the inaugural Southeast Exchange Conference on September 22, 2018, at the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Melinda Kibbe, Chair of UNC Department of Surgery. Eighty attendees at various levels of training attended the conference from at least four different institutions across the Southeast region, including Duke, UNC, Wake Forest, and Vanderbilt. This year, workshops focused on gender bias issues and contract negotiation were among the most popular.

Duke Surgery's Academic Success through Surgical Education and Training (ASSET) program and the Duke Student National Medical Association (SNMA) chapter initiated a collaboration to provide high school students under the Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP), an opportunity for a hands-on surgical skills activity.

Students from the Durham Nativity School recently participated in a unique, hands-on surgical skills workshop as part of a new educational outreach program from the Duke Department of Surgery.

The Academic Success Through Surgical Education and Training (ASSET) program aims to foster high achievement in science through surgical education for financially disadvantaged students at the Nativity School.
