Annika Wilson, M.S., CCC-SLP, and Audrey Walstom, DMA, MA, CCC-SLP, represented Duke Voice Care Center at two pride events this fall, showcasing the gender-affirming services offered by Duke Health.
Annika Wilson, who sees patients at Duke Otolaryngology of Raleigh, attended Durham Pride on September 28th. She shared materials about Duke Health's services and connected with other affirming healthcare groups that provide mental health services to this patient population. Annika is now planning further outreach with these groups to promote community awareness of available gender-inclusive health care.
On October 8th, Annika and Audrey participated in North Carolina State University’s annual PrideFest, celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month. This month was established in 1994 by Rodney Wilson to educate students about the legacy of the LGBT community. October was chosen because of the second march on Washington for Gay and Lesbian rights, later celebrated as National Coming Out Day on October 11th.
Our team at Duke Voice Care Center offers gender-affirming voice care services, including voice evaluation, voice therapy, vocal modification, and more. Our voice therapists are specially trained to provide evaluations and interventions for transgender and gender-diverse individuals who need support or guidance to reach their vocal goals .This includes those experiencing vocal dysphoria—displeasure with their voice and/or how it is perceived by others. By creating a personalized care plan, we help optimize vocal pitch, intonation, resonance, nonverbal communication, and more.
We're here to help you align your voice with your gender identity and meet your functional voice needs without causing vocal strain or fatigue.
