From Division to Department: Research Growth in Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences
Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences transitioned from a division to an independent department in 2019. A key aspect of the strategic plan for the new department has involved clinician–scientist recruitment to continue the department’s mission of “advancing and sharing knowledge in the field.”
Duke, UNC Chapters of the Association of Women Surgeons Hold Inaugural Southeast Exchange Conference
The Duke and UNC Chapters of the Association of Women Surgeons held the inaugural Southeast Exchange Conference on September 22, 2018, at the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Melinda Kibbe, Chair of UNC Department of Surgery. Eighty attendees at various levels of training attended the conference from at least four different institutions across the Southeast region, including Duke, UNC, Wake Forest, and Vanderbilt. This year, workshops focused on gender bias issues and contract negotiation were among the most popular.
High School Students Participate in Hands-On Surgical Skills Lab
Duke Surgery's Academic Success through Surgical Education and Training (ASSET) program and the Duke Student National Medical Association (SNMA) chapter initiated a collaboration to provide high school students under the Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP), an opportunity for a hands-on surgical skills activity.
Duke Surgery and Durham Nativity School Partner to Train Future Surgeons
Students from the Durham Nativity School recently participated in a unique, hands-on surgical skills workshop as part of a new educational outreach program from the Duke Department of Surgery.
The Academic Success Through Surgical Education and Training (ASSET) program aims to foster high achievement in science through surgical education for financially disadvantaged students at the Nativity School.
Engaging youth from underrepresented populations in STEM/Healthcare projects:
- Partnering with the Duke BOOST Program (Building Opportunities and Overtures in Science and Technology). Our faculty, residents and staff provide educational content for the Duke BOOST curriculum, including educational videos and presentations at Science Saturday events.
- Mary Ann Black Summer Internship: 2022 presenters include Jamila Mingha, PhD, CCC-SLP and Harley Walter, CMA.
- Duke FEMMES+ (Females and Allies Excelling More in Math, Engineering and Science). HNS&CS Assistant Professor Janet Lee, MD, residents, and medical student Tara Thomason taught kids about hearing as well as how to suture, tie surgical knots, and use a flexible laryngoscope as part of the FEMMES+ Capstone program
