What were you looking for in a residency program?

My primary consideration when choosing a residency program was the people. I asked myself, "Who do I want to spend the next 5 years working with and learning from?" Day in and day out, my co-residents keep me going. Our faculty are compassionate and instructive. Sure, Duke has some great facilities and resources, but these would be inconsequential without the people who drive them.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?

Thanks to our diverse group of faculty members, we get a broad but in-depth exposure to all subspecialties within otolaryngology. We spend time both at a large top-tier academic center, as well as smaller community hospitals and practices. Personally, I also appreciate that Duke has one of the strongest engineering schools in the country, so there are innumerable opportunities for collaboration.

What advice do you have for incoming interns?

Ask questions! There is so much to learn, and pretty much everyone is happy to teach. Also, don't hesitate to provide feedback to your seniors. We're always looking for ways to make things better.

What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?

The Triangle is full of fun and interesting people - lots of explants from all over the country (Hello, New York!), but also locals who are just really proud of their hometown and love living here. There's tons of great, fresh, locally-sourced food. I love that within 15 minutes of my house, I can go for a walk along a nice lake, get some fresh ice cream at the farm, or slurp down a delicious bowl of laksa in town. Most importantly, it almost never snows here.

What do you like to do outside of Duke?

I de-stress by playing the drums and going on long bike rides. I love to cook and bake, especially using the fruits and vegetables from our garden. I watch a lot of soccer, and I have been not-so-subtly indoctrinating my sons into becoming Man Utd. fans.
