The Duke Otolaryngology Residency Program is set to resume in-person interviews for the first time since transitioning to Zoom during the pandemic.
This change is a positive one for both applicants and faculty. Meeting in person allows applicants to engage directly with the program, facilitating more natural and spontaneous conversations that can be difficult to achieve in a virtual setting.
“It allows the applicant to get their hands on the program,” says program director Charles R. Woodard, M.D. “There’s more opportunity for organic conversation that is sometimes challenging in a Zoom environment.”
Additionally, in-person interviews allow applicants to visit Durham and the surrounding area, which is crucial for making an informed decision about whether the program aligns with their needs and preferences.
Applicants can expect a comprehensive and engaging interview process. On the interview day, applicants are divided into two groups: one group that interviews with faculty and residents and the other that tours the facilities.
After a group lunch, the groups switch activities, ensuring that all applicants experience both components of the interview day.
The evening social event, held either the night before or the night of the interview, gives prospective residents insights into the program's culture and the collegiality of the current resident cohort. It also allows them to talk with residents and faculty in a relaxed atmosphere.
“It’s a great chance to interact in a less stressful environment,” Dr. Woodard says. “There’s also more time to learn about the applicant and what’s important to them.”
The Otolaryngology Residency Program is committed to leading in patient care, research, and education.
It provides numerous funded research opportunities within and beyond the department, and residents achieve a 100% fellowship match rate for subspecialty training. Through the longitudinal leadership development program, it prepares graduates to become leaders in academic and community settings.
The program receives between 350 and 400 applications each year and selects approximately 55 applicants for interviews. In 2025, interviews will be held January 7 through January 9.
