Clinical and Research Interests
Clinically, my major interests right now are around facial reconstructive work, functional results and quality of life for patients post-operatively.
I'm really interested in continuing research on facial nerve outcomes after surgery and trauma, specifically facial nerve rehabiliation and reanimation. Based on previous work I've done for viral driven carcinogenesis, I'm also interested in how HPV drives tumorigenesis in oropharyngeal cancers, specifically at a microbiome level.
What are the strengths of the Duke program?
I wanted a program that put a lot of thought and effort into how to best benefit resident learning and well-being simultaneously. Every month, I notice Duke taking steps to improve both of these, before I've even noticed a need for improvement - the leadership genuinely goes above and beyond for us here.
What advice do you have for incoming interns?
If you go into work with a good attitude and a sense of humor, that's how you'll leave work too.
What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
Coming from DC for medical school, I was really surprised by just how nice people were inside and outside the hospital! It makes such a difference when the people you're surrounded by are kind and going out of their way to help each other out. Also, Durham is very hip with lots of cool coffee shops and restaurants. The research triangle far exceeded my expectations!
What do you like to do outside of Duke?
I hang out with my co-residents and the friends I made during the surgical orientation, visit friends who live in nearby cities on weekends off and spend way too much time at the Durham county public library.
