Duke Health's Peri-Operative Enhancement Team Featured in The Wall Street Journal

Today’s The Wall Street Journal features Duke Health's Peri-Operative Enhancement Team (POET), a collaboration between the Departments of Anesthesiology, Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, and Medicine, among others, to improve outcomes for high-risk surgery candidates.

Through the POET initiative, high-risk patients with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and anemia, are referred for treatment before surgery to increase their chances of success. "Pre-surgical optimization" programs, like the POET program, lead to a reduced risk of complications, shortened hospital stays, and lower rates of readmissions following surgery.
