
In June 2025, Russel R. Kahmke, MD, MBA, MMCi, FACS, Associate Professor of Surgery in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences (HNS&CS), achieved a significant professional milestone by passing the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) Adult Complex Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgery (ACTPS) Focused Practice Designation (FPD) Examination.
This certification recognizes advanced expertise in the surgical management of complex thyroid and parathyroid conditions. Dr. Kahmke is among the first at Duke—to receive this designation, underscoring his leadership and commitment to excellence in endocrine surgery. A total of 217 candidates participated, including 108 ABOHNS diplomates and 109 ABS diplomates.
The ACTPS FPD serves as a formal acknowledgment of a surgeon’s focused experience and skill in this highly specialized area, offering patients and referring providers a clear signal of quality and depth of care.
The certification process is rigorous, requiring not only board certification in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery but also extensive clinical experience and successful completion of a dedicated examination. By earning this designation, Dr. Kahmke joins a select group of surgeons who meet the highest standards in the field.
