Dr. Emily Commesso, a Highly Skilled Sleep Surgery-Trained Surgeon is joining the Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communications Sciences

Dr. Emily Commesso is a highly skilled sleep surgery-trained surgeon. Having completed her fellowship at the University of Southern California, she is now returning to Duke University as an assistant professor, where she will be the sole fellowship-trained sleep surgeon in North Carolina, offering vital care to patients with obstructive sleep apnea and snoring.

The field of sleep surgery is constantly evolving, with innovative treatments for sleep apnea and snoring emerging in recent years. Dr. Commesso will specialize in helping patients who have obstructive sleep apnea and have exhausted conservative/non-surgical treatment options without success.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a prevalent condition wherein airflow is impeded through the nose, mouth or throat  while breathing. The consequences of uncontrolled sleep apnea can lead to heightened risks of cardiovascular and metabolic issues. Many patients also experience cognitive impacts, a constant feeling of fatigue, reduced efficiency, and overall diminished quality of life.

Additionally, Dr. Commesso will address snoring, which, for some individuals, may require surgical intervention when non-surgical options have proven ineffective. Her approach to patient care is characterized by thoughtfulness and compassion. She engages in extensive conversations with patients before considering any surgical procedure, ensuring that surgery is genuinely necessary. Dr. Commesso understands that every patient is unique, and she tailors treatment plans accordingly, carefully weighing the risks and benefits of each option.

Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Emily Commesso looks forward to forging strong relationships with referring providers within and outside Duke Health. She aims to collaborate closely with specialists in Sleep Medicine, Pulmonology, Neurology,  Bariatrics, and Primary Care, further enhancing the comprehensive care provided to patients.

The department is thrilled to welcome Dr. Emily Commesso, as her expertise and dedication will undoubtedly elevate the standard of care for those dealing with sleep-related issues.
