April Events at DVCC: Celebrating World Voice Day

By Aleksandra Zabiran

In recognition of World Voice Day (WVD), an annual event celebrated worldwide on April 16, we want to take a moment to recognize the power of voice. The voice is a critical aspect of effective and healthy communication, and it plays an enormous role in our daily lives.

At Duke Voice Care Center (DVCC), our team of speech-language pathologists understands that your voice is an essential part of your identity, your creative expression, and your livelihood. Our advanced training and experience ensure we have the knowledge and expertise to help you achieve the best possible recovery of your voice if you seek treatments at Duke.

In recognition of World Voice Day, our team has been excited to promote vocal health and wellness at the following events:

On March 15, DVCC team members Gina Vess, CCC-SLP, and Dan Sherwood, CCC-SLP joined the Black Family Wellness Expo by The Links, INC. They hosted an exhibit to promote awareness of voice problems, provide education about vocal health, and engage participants in voice screenings. The event featured health screenings, live music, cooking demos, and more to improve health and economic disparities in the Black community. The Links, INC, established in 1946, is one of the nation's oldest and largest volunteer service organizations dedicated to enriching, sustaining, and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other people of African ancestry.

On April 5, 2205, Dan Sherwood, MS/CCC-SLP, and Eileen Raynor, MD participated in the Duke Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) program which is designed to inspire and support high school students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and the health professions. Dan and Dr. Raynor provided education on health professions in voice care. Participants learned about voice science and the numerous professions that intersect in the vocal health sphere, including speech-language pathology, otolaryngology, physician assistants, nurses, and more.

On April 27th, Dan Sherwood, MS/CCC-SP, will be leading a one-hour workshop, “Everything but the Larynx: Hanna Somatics-Informed Voice Therapy,” at the Association for Hanna Somatic Education (AHSE).

These efforts highlight the critical role of voice in effective communication and the commitment of DVCC to helping individuals achieve the best possible recovery of their voice.
