The Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences (HNS&CS) at Duke University held its annual Temporal Bone Dissection Course for residents at Duke and other regional institutions, providing an opportunity to get hands on training in advanced ear surgical techniques.
Our 7th Annual Duke Resident Temporal Bone Dissection Course took place this month at Duke University with the support of Stryker Corporation and its mobile dissection lab. This course was directed by HNS&CS Associate Professor Cal Cunningham, MD, and organized by the department’s Educational Program and Event Coordinator, Lori Allsbrook. Alejandro Rivas, M.D., Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and a renowned leader in endoscopic ear surgery, served as our invited guest speaker.
The year’s course was open to PGY-3 and PGY-4 residents from Duke University, The Medical University of South Carolina, Wake Forest University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The course didactics were divided into two sections: Focus on traditional temporal bone drilling and dissection in the Duke temporal bone lab, and endoscopic ear surgical dissections carried out in Stryker Corporation’s 8-station mobile lab. Participants gained a wide breadth of exposure to multiple surgical approaches and techniques.
Thank you to all the participants, organizers, sponsors, and Dr. Alejandro Rivas for another successful Temporal Bone Dissection Course.
