In 2024, several Duke Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences faculty, staff, and trainees completed various training programs to strengthen their professional and leadership skills.
By investing in professional development, the department is helping to ensure that our team remains at the forefront of medical education, research, and patient care. We’re proud of the participants for their dedication to continuous learning and improvement.
Team members took part in the following programs:
ADVANCE-UP
ADVANCE-UP (Academic DeVelopment, Advocacy, Networking, Coaching, and Education for Underrepresented Populations) is designed to enrich the experiences of underrepresented racial and ethnic faculty in academic medical centers. Over a 10-month period, participants engaged in sessions that focused on personal career development, skill building, peer mentoring, and communication. This program aims to promote a sense of community among underrepresented faculty, support timely promotions, and increase representation in leadership roles.
ALICE
ALICE (Academic Leadership, Innovation, and Collaborative Engagement) is a leadership development program for mid-career women faculty in the School of Medicine. The nine-month program helps faculty develop leadership, management, and communication skills. Participants receive opportunities for personal reflection, goal setting, peer mentoring, and structured 360 feedback, all while connecting with senior leaders and broadening their institutional awareness.
Duke Clinical Leadership Program
Founded in 2010, the Duke Clinical Leadership Program (DCLP) aims to expand leadership capacity within Duke Health. The program, conducted over six months, involves topics such as strategy and health policy, funds flow and operations, negotiation, leadership styles, personnel management, and difficult conversations. Participants have the chance to interact with leaders from various Duke entities, including the Duke Health System, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Fuqua School of Business.
LEADER
The LEADER program is an interactive, six-month initiative designed for faculty members beginning their research careers. It focuses on building the leadership skills necessary to manage research teams effectively. The program starts with a three-day leadership intensive and continues with monthly half-day sessions. Participants also receive two one-on-one executive coaching sessions to address individual career development goals. This program provides a unique opportunity to network with a multidisciplinary group of faculty from across the university.
HNS&CS Leadership Lived Out
Leadership Lived Out is an interprofessional development training initiative designed for all members of the healthcare team. Established in 2013, the program focuses on improving patient care by increasing self-awareness, empathy, motivation, and empowerment among participants. The year-long program includes leadership development seminars, extensive assessments, and personal coaching. Based on the Professionalism Intelligence Model, the program emphasizes cognitive, emotional, and leadership intelligence, anchored by core virtues such as initiative, integrity, responsibility, compassion, and accountability.
HNS&CS Servant Leadership Lived Out
We believe that the principles of effective leadership are ultimately grounded in serving others rather than serving oneself (i.e., servant leadership). Many mid-career faculty transition into new leadership or positions of influence that require honing interpersonal and leadership skills to be successful in their new responsibilities. Servant Leadership Lived Out was developed out of the desire to equip faculty during these key career transitions to be effective servant leaders. This program is individualized and involves 360 evaluations, personal coaching, and peer support over several months that is built on the Professionalism Intelligence Model.
