Dr. Jamila Minga and Dr. Howard Francis Participate in 46th Annual National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing Convention

By Aleksandra Zabiran

In April, the National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing (NBASLH) hosted its 46th annual convention in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Dr. Jamila Minga, PhD, CCC-SLP, and her laboratory team contributed to the conference by presenting a three-part series on right hemisphere brain damage. The series included a screening and discussion of the documentary “RHD: Hidden Diagnosis,” a student panel sharing the impact of apragmatism exposure, and an account of a survivor named Simon and his journey towards self-renewal.

“RHD: Hidden Diagnosis” is a documentary produced by Dr. Minga and directed by Michael Pearce, a professor of mass communication at North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU). The film delves into the profound impact of right hemisphere brain damage (RHD) on stroke survivors and their families. It provides an intimate look at the challenges and triumphs of these survivors.

The narrative also follows a dedicated group of graduate students from (NCCU) Speech-Language Pathology program. Amidst the Covid Pandemic, these students adapt and learn to facilitate an online communication treatment group for RHD stroke survivors.

In 2023, “RHD: Hidden Diagnosis” documentary was selected for screening at four prestigious film festivals: the North Carolina Film Festival, the Longleaf Film Festival, the Raleigh Film & Art Festival, and the Foothills Film Festival. By June 2024, the documentary is expected to be available for viewing through PBS.

Dr. Howard Francis, Chair of the Duke Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences department, participated in the opening session as the keynote speaker. His insights on addressing hearing disparities and healthcare access issues, particularly for older adults and ethnic minorities, provided valuable inspiration to NBASLH members and attendees.
